Day of Prayer 2008

In conjunction with the General Council's designated Week of Prayer and in preparation for this year in the Coast Counties Section a DAY OF PRAYER is being called for Thursday, January 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Marina Assembly of God.

James 5:16 exhorts us to "pray one for another that ye may be healed." We will participate in devotions, personal prayer, public prayer, and corporate prayer.

All credentialed persons and spouses are encouraged to participate.

Christmas Dinner

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Make your plans to attend the annual Coast Counties Section Christmas dinner Monday, December 10 at 6:30 p.m. First Assembly of God in Salinas will host this event.

SPECIAL GUEST: Nathan Fort, humorist extrordinaire

The evening includes dinner, give-aways, music, and entertainment. All of this for $15/person. Teen Challenge employees and World Missions pastors pay only $12/person.

CHURCH RELEVANCE IN THIS GENERATION

Coast Counties Section will hold a three-part seminar to address Church Relevance in this Generation. Each part is scheduled on a different date and after a meal together. Nationally-renowned guests have been invited to provide insight to ministers of all ages. The requested donation from each attendee is surprisingly affordable.

DAY OF PRAYER

Believers knew what to do when Peter suffered imprisonment by the Jews. Scripture says that "many people had gathered and were praying." This time of prayer was NOT personal prayer; it was corporate prayer. These people were under one roof praying for a need affecting the entire church.

Different local assemblies are one church with many needs. Pastors, staffs and lay-members are encouraged to participate in our "Sectional Day of Prayer". It has been scheduled for Tuesday, February 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Bethel Tabernacle in Watsonville.

BIENNIAL SECTIONAL TOUR

Our District Executive Officers will meet with credentialed ministers and church delegates of the section on Thursday, January 4. Green Valley Christian Center in Watsonville will host the 6:30 p.m. dinner. Participants can anticipate a wonderful roast beef dinner, great fellowship with other ministers, and a short business meeting.

Included in the business meeting will be district reporting, a presentation of vision, and the election of sectional officers.

RSVP’s are needed by Tuesday, January 2. Call (831) 728-1424. A $7.50 donation is requested for each dinner.

CHRISTMAS DINNER 2006

Bethany University in Scotts Valley will host the 2006 Coast Counties Section Christmas Dinner on Monday, December 11, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Pete McLeod, comedian and illusionist will provide some amazing and very funny entertainment for the evening.

Credentialed ministers, Bethany University administrators, faculty, and staff, and Teen Challenge leaders are invited to enjoy this great evening together. CHURCH SIZE TRANSITIONS

Challenge, frustration, or maybe just realization.Many pastors and church leaders, including laity, have “tried everything” to encourage their local church to grow – without lasting results.

The percentage of Assemblies of God churches under 200 has remained the same (16%) for the past twenty years.

Coast Counties Section will present Church Size Transitions with Dr. Jimmie Brewer on Friday, November 10 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Monterey Assembly of God is the host church.

Dr. Brewer, who serves as the Program Director for the School of Church Leadership Ministries at Bethany University will direct a discussion to help participants lead their churches with perspective and confidence.

AMBASSADORS CONCERT
First Assembly of God in Salinas hosts the Bethany University Ambassadors on Sunday, October 15 at 6:00 p.m. Reports of God’s miracles continue to come in. Pastor, bring the youth in your congregation to experience God’s touch in this Sunday evening praise service. Encourage them to consider a Bethany University education as they meet university students and faculty.

PREACHING & TEACHING FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT
Dr. Rich Israel and Dr. Tim Powell will make a presentation on “Preaching and Teaching from the Old Testament” Friday, October 20 at 7:00 p.m. Seaside Assembly of God will open its doors for the ministers of the section. Pastors’ wives are invited to attend and connect with Joyce Irwin during the meeting. Among the issues being addressed by Israel and Powell are:

Should the Pentecostal minister preach and teach from the Old Testament?
What hermeneutical tools can be used to properly interpret these passages?
How can the text’s genre enhance the sermon organization?

DAY OF PRAYER AND FASTING
Our General Superintendent, Thomas Trask, has called a “Day of Prayer and Fasting”. Pastors in the Coast Counties Section will gather at House of Prayer in Watsonville Tuesday, October 24 at 10:00 a.m.

WHAT MIGHT GOD DO?

God instructed Solomon, "Ask for whatever you want me to give you." This offer came in response to the young new king's symbolic statement. Solomon had offered one thousand burnt offerings.

By presenting a burnt offering to the Lord, the worshipper watched as the entire sacrifice was consumed in the fire. None of it was shared or eaten. "I can give no less than all to my holy God." ALL BELONGS TO GOD.

One thousand burnt offerings! "If I lived a thousand lifetimes, God would be worthy of total sacrifice."

What might God do if we gave ourselves entirely to him? How might he visit us during this coming District Council? A completely committed King Solomon asked for wisdom to administer justice. What can and will we ask for?

Plan to participate in the Coast Counties Section pre-Council prayer time.

Results from our good intentions don't look too good. In 2002, twenty Assemblies of God districts reported more than 130,000 conversions yet shrank in members! How can we help new believers "stick" with the church?

Starting Over in the Same Church?

A pastor's congregation or field of ministry may shrink for a variety of reasons. Should that pastor start over in the same church? Or, should he/she "move on"? Pastor Carl Friedel and Peninsula Christian Center of Pacific Grove will host a ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION on Thursday, February 16 at 11:30 a.m. Some of the questions to be discussed include:

Is the grass greener on the other side of the fence?
What is God saying about my ministry?
Can I start over in the same church?
What kind of ministry does this church need?
Do I have the gifts to continue serving this church?
How does God "move senior/staff pastors on"?

DAY OF PRAYER

Our sectional DAY OF PRAYER is scheduled for Thursday, January 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at First Assembly of God in Marina. Wayne Evans, our secretary/treasurer, has asked three things of each of us --

set aside the day and be in attendance
consider a voluntary assignmet [senior pastor, staff pastor, missionary, etc] to bring a short (5-10 minutes) devotional of your choice on any "prayer of the Bible"
begin to "snail-mail, e-mail, or FAX prayer request to the Marina church

I urge you to give this call high priority in your schedule. Our fellowship and work in prayer is indespensable.
